What inspired you to do this as your chosen career?
My real passion for weddings came from planning my own over 10 years ago. When sourcing suppliers I found it increasingly difficult to find things that really suited me. I have always been creative and believe that extra attention to detail is very important. After a large number of years working in events and marketing, I decided it was time to truly put my creativity to work. Time to bring something a little extraordinary to Weddings and Events. And Elf Occasions was born! Having qualified as a wedding planner I found that I absolutely loved the venue styling aspect, so it made sense to focus my real passion on this area. I enjoy sourcing and making unique and high-quality products to ensure my couples get only the best for their wedding.
How does the process work with creating the styling for a wedding?
Following initial contact with the couple, we start with some questions to gauge what they are looking for. This includes the when/where/what they want styled, any themes or colour schemes they would like included and any pictures or items they have seen that they like.We then offer a free first consultation where we can really get to know our client, understand what they are looking for and bring their ideas to life!Where possible we like to do the consultation at the clients wedding venue as that way we can bring lots of samples and dress a small area. This way the client gets a feel for the quality of our items and starts to visualise exactly what it will look like. The White Hart are always great with allowing us to do this, it really does help paint a picture for our couples and they get another look at where they will be getting married!Once everything is finalised, we get back in touch around 6 weeks before the wedding (8 if we are doing the table plan) to finalise numbers and we are in contact with the venue a few weeks before to confirm set up and break down times. This way we ensure it all runs like clockwork! We are however always available at the end of the phone or email if the client wants to discuss anything in the meantime!
What makes a venue easier or more difficult to decorate?
Knowing the venue well definitely makes it easier to decorate, you know what works, where things look nice and what the layout usually is. We’ve done many weddings at the White Hart, so we really have a good knowledge of what works within the venue! Good communication with the venue also always makes it easier to decorate! I think it’s important to keep in touch with the venue to understand timings for set up and break down to ensure we fit within the timescales and make it all look perfect.
Do you ever get couples with totally different ideas and how do you balance them to create something everyone will like?
Yes I do and sorry grooms but most of the time the bride wins! If the couple have different ideas on what they want I do try to find some kind of compromise to suit them both. Again our consultations really help the couple visualise ideas and find a style they are both more than happy with.
To what extent do you keep your eye on the latest trends for weddings and do you often get couples asking for similar decoration styles?
I do keep an eye on trends and I especially like to see what trends come from America and Australia! But I think it’s really important to have your own take on a trend and turn it into something new and completely unique.
What are the most unusual requests you have received for decorating a wedding?
I’ve had a few unusual wedding themes and I love adding little touches that are unique and personal to that couple. I did a table plan package for a recent wedding for a couple who were big fans of history and archaeology. We did the table plan in the style of a historical timeline in old century writing and an order of the day to match. It worked really well and was really personal to them!
